History
The history of the IIT system dates back to 1946 when a committee was set up by Hon'ble Sir Jogendra Singh, Member of the Viceroy's Executive Council, Department of Education, Health and Agriculture to consider the setting up of Higher Technical Institutions for post war industrial development in India.

It also asks university representatives on the performance of universities, and evaluates university resources, teacher salaries, graduation rates, student academic achievements and satisfaction. After calculating and comparing these criteria, U.S. News ranks the top international universities accordingly.
Housing services
IIT KGP is well known for its extensive residential facilities. Spread over a sprawling 2100 acres, IIT Kharagpur houses almost 10,000 students. There are 21 Halls of Residences (16 for boys, 5 for girls) around campus.
Medical services
The B.C. Roy Technology Hospital located at the centre of the Campus is available for all campus residents. It provides indoor and outdoor medical facilities for common ailments. The hospital has a competent team of doctors, ICU, OT, all required diagnostic facility etc.
Campus life
Our location is just a couple of hours drive from the bustling metro-city, Kolkata. It's a serene and creative place with vibrancy of youth all around, where the coffee flows and calmness is preferred. IIT Kharagpur is the 1st IIT and has the largest campus area among all the IITs. Fully residential campus away from the hustle-bustle of city accelerates the campus life towards social and creative gatherings and develops among them the extra-ordinary skill in all the spheresâ??academic, extra-curricular, social et al.
Sports facilities
Technology Students' Gymkhana is the nerve centre for sports, cultural and social activities of the students. The Centre is also facilitated with a state of art gymnasium which can be accessed by Institute staff and campus residents. An Aquatic Club with swimming pools is centrally located right beside the Gymkhana. The Pools, which remain open from morning to late evenings, provide sport, exercise and relaxation par excellence.
Student clubs
The campus has two clubs, Technology Club and Staff for campus residents for get together, social cultural programmes and events.
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) was accredited by AICTE and Ranked 6 For Overall By NIRF 2021.
