History
The local Studiorum Universitas was formally established by Pope Paul III in November 1548, although the city of the Strait boasts an ancient cultural tradition as well as a teaching tradition connected to a law school in the late 13th century and a well-known Greek school in the 15th century.

Research
The University of Messina promotes actions to encourage projects in research, both academic and collaborative, to grasp and enhance all funding opportunities offered nationally and internationally. In fact, scientific research is increasingly supported by the public funding system (Regions, Ministries, European Union), private (industry and private donors) and philanthropic (Foundations and Associations) through competitive calls for funding dedicated to the development of projects.

The Welcome office (WO) deals with all procedures having to do with:
- international student recruitment and related promotional activities;
- evaluation of international students applications;
- relations with the Italian Diplomatic Authorities and Italian Consulates abroad, and any organizations and Universities involved in the procedures of pre-registration for non-EU students.
Housing services
Living in a student residence hall provides students with a good living situation, close to other students, as well as being near the University. Since the number of rooms for foreign students and visitors is limited, assignment of rooms is subject to availability. University Residences are located at:
- ERSU Annunziata Campus – Contrada Battaglia, SS. Annunziata
- ERSU Papardo Campus – Contrada Papardo, Ganzirri
- UniME Sport Centre – SS. Annunziata
Library services
UniME has a well-stocked library with the best scientific and academic publications. The on-line integrated library database (S.B.A.) and updated information on academic and research activities and services (LISI–SCOPUS) are freely available at the University website.

All University premises are equipped with free wi-fi connection.
Medical services
EU students must be sure to have made arrangements for health coverage before arriving in Italy. They need to obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from their local Health Authority, which enables them to register freely with the Italian National Health Service. For non-EU citizens health insurance coverage is required in order to obtain your visa and your residence permit in Italy.
Campus life
UniME is organized into 4 main campuses. The University offers free shuttle bus services to reach the “Annunziata” and “Papardo” Campuses. Students have the opportunity to use the city buses and trams for a discounted price. The Central Building is located in the city centre the Central Building hosts the Rectorate, the University’s Administration Offices and the secretary offices. The University Hospital Policlinico Universitario “G. Martino” is located in the southern part of the city, the “Annunziata” Campus is located in the centre-north part of the city and the “Papardo” Campus is located in the northern part of the city.
Sports facilities
UniME offers a modern and fully equipped sports centre run by the University Sports Centre (SSD UniME). Sports facilities promote amateur sports and are among the most advanced in Italy.Students can participate in sports and take courses in all main indoor and outdoor sports. Sports facilities include indoor and outdoor pools, dance room, a large multi-gym area, rugby, baseball, tennis, soccer and hockey pitches, and more.
