History

The University of Gdansk was founded on 20 March 1970. It was formed from an amalgamation of two institutions of higher education: the Higher Economics School in Sopot and the Higher Pedagogical School in Gda?sk. Later, it also included the Higher Teacher Training School.

Education

The University of Gdańsk cooperates with institutions of higher education in most countries in Europe and also with many countries around the world. Research and other activities are conducted within the framework of over one hundred international agreements with foreign partners. A series of  University institutes and departments have obtained, or are in the process of obtaining, the prestigious status of centres of excellence, which is the European certificate and stamp of quality. The numerous foreign placements undertaken by the University’s academic staff  help them to offer students a modern and open education.

Research

Among the successes of the University of Gdańsk has been its participation in the special programme by the Foundation for Polish Science – International Research Agendas, based on creating innovative centres of excellence in Poland with the co-operation  of the best researchers from the entire world. The University of Gdańsk has won the programme twice, receiving 76 million PLN to create two agendas – the International Centre for Cancer Vaccine Science, which will be headed by two world-class researchers, Prof. Ted Hupp and Prof. Robin Fahraeus, and the International Centre for Theory of Quantum Technologies (ICTQT), with Prof. Marek Żukowski as Director.

Housing services

The University of Gdańsk has a wide range of accommodation in its student dormitories located all over the Three Cities.  Depending on the particular dormitory, facilities include: kitchens, quiet rooms for study, laundry facilities, drying rooms, and even exercise facilities. We also have rooms adapted to meet the needs of handicapped students. Monthly cost of accommodation varies from dormitory to dormitory, but is in the range of 300-500 zł.

Library services

The Library of the University of Gdańsk was founded in 1970 at the same time when the University of Gdańsk was  established. The Library consists of the Main Library in Gdańsk-Oliwa, seven specialist libraries and the British Library. Apart from being an academic library it also serves as an educational, information and cultural centre for the whole region.

Campus life

A modern campus – for many years the University has been carefully investing in infrastructure development in order to ensure appropriate conditions for students and the highest possible quality of education

The available space in all University buildings for teaching, research, and administration comprises some 137,000 square meters. The largest University campus is the Oliwa Campus which has almost 98,000 square meters for teaching and research.

Sports facilities

Students can choose their sport from among: team games, fitness training, tennis, table tennis, Nordic walking, badminton, swimming, weight lifting, contemporary dance, self-defense, climbing, skating, and running. They can also go to physical therapy classes of various kinds.

Students who are especially good at sports can join the Academic Sports Association, and follow their chosen sport in one of its sections.

The Medical University of Gdańsk is recognizable all over the world, for years enjoying high renown among national and international institutions dealing with assessing schools of higher education. The most recent and valid comprehensive assessment conducted by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the quality of the research works or research and development activities pursued by scientific entities three MUG Faculties, i.e. the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, and the Faculty of Pharmacy were awarded grade A, and the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology UG & MUG was awarded grade A+.
