Studying East Asia in Seville
My five years as an undergraduate student at the University of Seville have been the most cherished years of my life. While studying this bachelor’s degree, I had the opportunity of learning about Asia, a continent whose present relevance is undeniable, yet still so unknown to us. What I found particularly interesting was the teaching of Asian languages, as it enabled us, students, to better understand the cultures studied. Moreover, by sharing courses with exchange students, I was able to meet people from different cultures and learn about them, outside the academic sphere. When learning about cultures so distant from yours, you have to be open-minded and be able to learn without prejudice, always humbly. Studying this degree has not only made me knowledgeable about a certain topic but also taught me how to value different perspectives.
However, studying this degree was not always ideal. The lack of specialized teachers in Asia or the deficiency of technological infrastructure—such as Wi-Fi connection during online exams or the difficulties when teachers tried showing PowerPoint-based explanations—are some of the shortcomings of this undergraduate degree. One element that left it wanting was the in-depth study of other Asian nations—such as Korea or Mongolia—rather than focusing just on China and Japan. The study of other nations would have given the students a more complete knowledge of the continent and, especially, of their bilateral political relations. In my opinion, learning about Southeast Asia would have also improved the curriculum, as relevant historical events such as the Vietnam War were not taught in this degree.
Despite its flaws, I had a wonderful time studying this bachelor’s degree in East Asian Studies, as it has enabled me to fully understand the relevance of these nations nowadays and their future roles in international politics and the global economy. Despite its shortcomings, I believe this bachelor’s degree has more positive points than flaws. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this undergraduate degree, as it is a great way of gaining a deep understanding of the different cultures that form Asia.
