University of Ioannina

History

The University of Ioannina was founded in 1964. In 1970 became an independent Higher Education Institution, which grew rapidly in the coming years.Today, the University of Ioannina includes 17 academic Departments which altogether number 13,523 undergraduate students.

Education

A number of organised postgraduate study programmes are on offer that combine taught and research elements both at Master's and Doctoral level. Approximately 1,300 students are involved in full-time study mode progressing to a Master's degree, while 2,217 students are currently pursuing their studies at Doctoral level.

Research

The Biomedical Research Institute was founded in 1998 and has since been providing a flexible scientific environment for research on biomedical sciences and medical technology. It is part of a wider system of Research Institutes under the aegis of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology of the Ministry of Development.

The Careers Office offers support to students in terms of career planning, further study and employment consultancy.

  • You can reach Ioannina by regular intercity bus services from Athens, Thessaloniki, Igoumenitsa, Preveza, Kakavia (Albania), and other Greek cities.
  • A regular ferry service from Igoumenitsa to the ports of Italy connects Ioannina with Western Europe. A relevant service also links the city with Corfu.
  • The city of Ioannina has an airport at a distance of 4 km. from the city centre and 10 km. from the campus, with daily flights to Athens.

The University of Ioannina has the largest, in terms of effective surface area (14,500 sq. m. divided into six storeys), single library in Greece, which has been named the "The University of Ioannina Library and Information Centre" due to the wide use of information technology.

ICT services

Easy access to computer services is available on campus, even from the rooms in the residence halls, via the network installed on campus, or via phone lines off campus.The system supports connections with other national or international networks.Students register for a computer account and are provided with a personal e-mail address and unlimited access to the Internet.

Medical services

Citizens of European Union Member States (whether academics, students or staff) visiting the University of Ioannina for a short period of time should be provided (from their country and on condition that they are insured by or covered by a statutory social security system) with the European Health Insurance Card or a provisional replacement certificate.

Campus life

The University premises are situated in one of the largest campuses of Greece, an attractive location about six kilometers from the centre of Ioannina. The University is easily accessible from the city by bus or by car.The Campus is set in 350 hectares with extensive green areas surrounding the building complexes, which house the University Schools and Services.The buildings, covering a total area of 170,000 sq. m., boast modern lecture halls, student and research laboratories, offices and a central library. Lectures with large audiences are delivered in the auditoriums, whereas scientific conferences and other events take place in the Conference Centre.

Sports facilities

Sports facilities include an athletic track and field stadium, outdoor tennis, basketball and volleyball courts and an indoor gym with a seating capacity of 1,000 spectators. An indoor swimming pool at the city residence halls is also available to the students and faculty members.
