To assist in the transition from life at home to life on the SHSU campus, all "beginning" first year students are required to live in university residence halls and participate in a meal plan during their first year (normally includes Fall and Spring semesters).

Sam Houston State University, located in Huntsville, Texas, is a member of The Texas State University System. The school was created by the Texas Legislature in 1879 as Sam Houston Normal Institute to educate teachers for the public schools of Texas. The baccalaureate degree was first awarded in 1919.


SHSU offers over 80 bachelor's degree programs, more than 50 master’s degree programs, and six doctoral programs, including nationally-recognized programs in Business, Fine Arts, Education, Mathematics and Criminal Justice.


Sam Houston State University hosts more than twenty academic Research Centers and institutes that support a diversity of research interests and scholars dedicated to innovative research and discovery. Housing services

All 26 of our residence halls and apartments provide economical and convenient living for students. We house approximately 3300 Bearkats, providing one of the widest varieties of living options in this region of the country.

Library services

The Newton Gresham Library serves the research needs of the Sam Houston State University community. The library holds over 1.3 million books, bound periodicals, and government documents and a variety of formats, including multimedia, digital collections, microforms, microfiche, phonograph records, videotape, and newspapers.

Medical services

The Student Health Center, located at the corner of Avenue J and Bearkat Boulevard, provides comprehensive routine health services and education to currently enrolled students.

The Department of Residence Life here on the campus of Sam Houston State University provides one of the widest varieties of living options in this region of the country. Sports facilities

Men’s intercollegiate sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field. Women’s sports include basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball.

Student clubs

SHSU has over 235 registered student organizations. With so many amazing organizations that are actively engaged on campus, it is easy to find one that is right for you. It is also easy to create a new student organization! Either way, boundless opportunity exists for students to get connected and make a difference during their time at SHSU.
