The University of Agder is a public institution mandated to provide higher education, conduct research and development, disseminate knowledge about the institution’s activities, methods and results of the academic activities and contribute to the development of society. The University of Agder (UiA) is situated on the southern tip of Norway and is located on two campuses, in Kristiansand and Grimstad.

The university is one of the youngest universities in Norway, but its history dates back to 1839 when the first teacher training institution in the region was established. It is a public university with state-of-the-art buildings on both campuses. Research is the foundation of all teaching activities at UiA and covers a wide variety of disciplines.

These values are reflected in a flat organisational structure which encourages students, lecturers and researchers to interact and inspire each other.’Agder’ means ’on the edge’ and the name suits the university and the twin counties of Vest-Agder and Aust-Agder in the southern part of the country.   • Two Horizon 2020-projects to CIEM
Centre for Integrated Emergency Management (CIEM) at UiA is involved in two EU projects that are now granted 38 and 179 million NOK. The projects will make relief work in emergencies safer and more efficient.
  • Religion and society in the spotlight
The research group "Religion and World-Views in Social Context" conducts research on how society and economy are affected by people’s philosophical values.


They offer drop-in career guidance on given days. Here you get 15 minutes to go through your resume and/or application, or to start the job-seeking process. If there is need for more than 15 minutes, a new appointment can be agreed upon.Visit the Student Service Centre, and they will give you an appointment at least 30 minutes before starting time and show you the way to our offices.The next drop-in time will be announced at semester start.


Student services

Buddy programme:As a new student at the University of Agder, you will automatically be able to participate in the buddy programme. UiA arranges a buddy programme for all new students, and the Erasmus Student Network arranges a special buddy programme just for international students. New international students will be placed in buddy groups with Norwegian students who meet them on arrival day and show them around for the first weeks. ESN buddies are students who already know the campus.

Housing services

Both campuses have attractive day-care centres for children of students and university staff. Student housing is of high quality and many of the buildings are on or close to the campuses. The cafeteria is ranked as the most popular student cafeteria in the nation year after year.

Student Life

Campus life

The University of Agder has two campuses, Campus Kristiansand and Campus Grimstad. In total more than 11 000 students and almost 1200 staff members have the two campuses as their work place.

KristiansandThe Kristiansand campus buildings are enclosed by park grounds and have a sleek, contemporary design. The campus is close to recreational areas and in walking distance of the city centre. GrimstadThe top-notch facilities at Campus Grimstad include a media production studio, a simulated hospital, advanced laboratories and a smart house for technology testing.

Sports facilities

The sport facilities are very good, with a training centre on campus and a lot of outdoor options.

Student clubs

SiA (Student Association of Agder):

  • SiA is the welfare and cultural organization for students in the southernmost part of Norway, known as Sørlandet. We are here to contribute to a safe and comfortable atmosphere so that students can have the best possible foundation for success.
  • SiA runs daycare centres, housing services and bookshops. We operate cafeterias and pubs such as Kafe Kampus, Østsia, Luftslottet and the gym Spicheren, and we support festivals and 50 student organizations.
  • SiA is student-run, and profits are used to improve and create new services for students.


The school will obtain AACSB accreditation by fall 2017
