About
History
- We were initially linked to Canterbury College and welcomed our first intake of students way back in 1880.
- In 1896, when agriculture had become well established as the mainstay of New Zealand’s exports, we separated from Canterbury College and became Canterbury Agricultural College, with our own governing body and the ability to award degrees through the University of New Zealand.

- Our purpose is to facilitate excellent research and education to grow the knowledge of our students, and help shape a world that benefits from a greater understanding of the relationships between land, food and ecosystems.
Research
- The Research Management Office oversees our research outputs and facilitates excellence and relevance in research for the sustainable management of national resources to enhance social, environmental and economic viability.

- The campus has modern teaching facilities, a comprehensive library, and information technology laboratories with 24-hour access, as well as free cark parking, eateries, a printery, a travel agency, and world-class sporting facilities.
- On-campus accommodation is home to about 600 students during the university year. Options include catered Halls of Residence, self-catered residential halls and student flats.
