Saratov State University was founded in June, 1909 and named after Emperor of Russia Nicholas II.

SSU Regional Scientific Library is one of the leading units in the university. It provides literature and information for education and research. It is a regional center of knowledge, spiritual and intellectual communication, and culture.
The main goal of the library is to ensure full and efficient library and information services for students, researchers, university faculty and staff.
Sports facilities
Saratov State University sport club was founded on 23 September, 2009.
Sport Club carries sport and fitness work with students and university faculty and staff.
There are 33 section including Futsal, basketball, volleyball, karate, darts, table tennis, aerobics, fencing, handball, chess, swimming, cheerleading and others.
2013-2014 National University Rating was published on 5 June, 2014. Saratov State University is at the Top-20 holding the 18th position.
Number one is Lomonosov Moscow State University; second place is taken by Saint Petersburg State University; National Research Nuclear University MEPhI comes 3rd.
SSU has kept its position in the Top-20 among 161 other universities included in the rating.
2013-2014 rating includes data on classical and national research universities as well as technical, economical, medical, agrarian, and transport universities.
