History

In 1887 Dr. Enryo Inoue founded the private Philosophy Academy (forerunner of Toyo University) on the grounds of Rinsho Temple in today's Bunkyo Ward of Tokyo. Later in 1906 the name changed to Toyo University. A university with a long tradition and history that is to celebrate the 125th anniversary of its foundation in 2012

Education

With 11 faculties, comprised of 44 departments spread across four main campuses and one satellite campus, Toyo University satisfies the diverse curiosities and eagerness to learn of its students, by providing high-quality classes over a wide range of fields. In addition, the University is actively involved in improving the skills of the faculty in order to enhance education.

Research

The Bio-Nano Electronics Research Centre was established in 1996 in order to initiateand carry out advanced combined studies on bioscience and nanotechnology. The Centre’s research and educational activities have mainly been supported by external funding including Grants for High-Tech Research Centres, for the 21st Century’s Centre of Excellence (COE) Programmes and for the Programmes for the Strategic Research Foundation at Private Universities organised by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Japan.

Student services are offered by various departments such as student affairs office, student consultation service, disaster support or even residence.

Housing services

The Toyo University International House ("I-House") is located in the heart of Tokyo and provides ideal accessibility to all major areas, such as Shinjuku, Asakusa, Ueno, Ikebukuro and Roppongi. Hakusan campus is only 15 minutes away on foot.

Library services

The bigining of Toyo University library systemdeates back to 1888 when Dr.Enryo Inoue,the founder of the university,provided books and a reading rooom in the original school building. At present, the university has libraris at Hakusan (Main) , Asaka, Kawagoe, and Itakura campuses with more than 1,260,000 voiumes and periodicals.

ICT services

Computers connected to the university LAN in the Computer Room can use various applications such as word processing software, spreadsheet software, and statistics software, and can also connect to the Internet. The Self-Study Computer Room can be used for various study purposes such as creating reports and research papers. An account is needed in order to use the Computer Room.

Medical services

There is an infirmary on each campus that can apply first-aid for sudden illnesses or injuries.Cost of treatment and medicine is free. They also have introductory services to medical institutions.

Campus life

Including the Hakusan Campus, Toyo University has four campuses. All campuses are conveniently located within a 10 minute walk from the closest station.

Sports facilities

Sports are a traditional part of Toyo University activities. Based on the spirit of scholar athletes, teamwork and sportsmanship are cultivated through sporting events.

Our most popular sports teams include our long-distance track team that won the Hakone Ekiden, our hardball baseball club that won the national championship, our ice skating club hockey team that won the Kanto Universities Ice Hockey League, and our sumo club that produces many champions at student competitions. Our soccer club, rugby club, and swimming club also perform well at various competitions.

Toyo University has been accredited as a Specialist Center of Excellence on PPPs (Public-Private Partnerships) in Local Governments, one of the International PPP Centers of Excellence, the establishment of which is promoted worldwide by the Cooperation and Partnerships Section (Chief: Geoffrey Hamilton) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
