New Bulgarian University

The mission of New Bulgarian University is to be an autonomous liberal education institution dedicated to the advancement of university education by offering accessible and affordable opportunities for interdisciplinary and specialized education and research of high quality. 


New Bulgarian University was established on 18 September 1991 with a resolution by Bulgarian Parliament. 


New Bulgarian University pioneered the introduction in Bulgaria of a credit system, Professional Bachelor’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s programs, distance and continuing education.


The Center for Career Development and Educational Resources is an integral part of the contemporary tertiary education in every university, throughout Europe. It ensures that high quality services are provided to students in relation to their career orientation and planning, preparation, as well as to the effective partnership between students and employers.

Housing services

Most students at New Bulgarian University rent an apartment near the university or in the city centre. You can choose any neighbourhood in Sofia, as there is a metro station only 5 minutes away from the university – it is called Miziya / New Bulgarian University. This means you can easily reach the lecture halls even if you live on the other side of the capital city.

Library services

The New Bulgarian University Library was founded in 1995 comprising the collections of three libraries - the old AONSU library, The Master's Faculty Library and the Library of the Law Department. This was the beginning. Overall reconstructure aiming at the furter functioning and development of the newly created library was the next step. 

Medical services

Comprehensive dental care:

  • esthetic dental crowns, bridges and dentures
  • personal oral hygiene instructions

Campus life

The university campus consists of two buildings (Building 1 and Building 2) housing the Aula, Library, University Theater, NBU Museum, UniArt Gallery, Medical Center with a First-Aid Room and a Dental Office, Sports Center, coffee shops, a restaurant and a Bulgarian Posts branch surrounded by trees and with large open green spaces.

Campus and facilities development at NBU is aimed at ensuring modern teaching and learning conditions satisfying the most stringent quality standards.

Sports facilities

  • An outdoor mini football pitch with sports facilities for volleyball, badminton and handball. Edel Grass system play surface. Lighting.
  • Outdoor gym

The National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency, which reviews Bulgaria’s higher education teaching, granted NBU maximum accreditation in three consecutive accreditations in 2001, 2006, 2012 and 2019. Since 2004, NBU is an accredited partner of the Open University UK.
