History
The University of Patras was founded in the city of Patras on 11 November 1964 as a self-governed Academic Institution under the supervision of the Greek Government. The University was initially established with the intention to focus on natural sciences, technology, economics, business administration and social sciences.
Education
Together with its educational and research work, the vibrant campus life of the University of Patras attracts many students every year as their first and foremost choice for Higher Education studies.
Research
Besides its distinguished path in education, the University of Patras excels in various fields of basic and applied research. The University of Patras has acquired international prominence in research areas such as Health, Environment, Biotechnology, Mechanics, Electronics, Informatics and Basic Science. A number of its academic Departments, laboratories and clinics have been recognized as centres of excellence on the basis of international assessment.

Housing services
The Student Residence Hall is located within the campus, about 300 m East of the Administration Building. The residence has 664 single and 17 double bedrooms, a large restaurant, a theatre, an indoor swimming- pool, recreational facilities and snack-bars. Accommodation costs about 5€ per day. There is also a smaller Student Residence at Sihena, situated about 4 km East of the campus, which is owned by the University and operated by the Directorate of Student Care.
Medical services
The University of Patras is responsible for issuing the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC – Greek acronym: EKAA) for the above categories of students, in case they travel to European Union countries, as well as for the coverage of any expenses that may arise, in accordance with the applicable terms and conditions.

Accreditation
University of Patras becomes first Greek University to receive IChemE accreditation. The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) has awarded the Department of Chemical Engineering at University of Patras (ChemEngUP), international accreditation for its Integrated Master Diploma (2017).
