Nils Månsson Mandelgren, artist and ethnologist, started the Söndags-Rit-skola för Hantverkare (Sunday Drawing School for Artisans). During their free time, apprentices should be given the opportunity to learn for example ornamental and freehand drawing and obtain an artistic education. The following year the school was handed over to the newly started Swedish Association of Handicrafts.
Konstfack's four departments offer different educations within the field of arts, crafts, design and teacher education.
Probably no other university college of the arts in Europe has such well-equipped workshops as Konstfack. Konstfack has a research environment strong enough to promote research within its branches of knowledge while pursuing interdisciplinary, international collaboration with others. The research environment is characterised by close cooperation with first and second-cycle programmes.
The Student Office is responsible for admissions, support for students with disabilities, registrations, transcript of records, certificates, credit transfers, approved leave from studies and degree certificates.
Konstfack is unfortunately unable to help students find housing.
Konstfack boasts one of Sweden's most comprehensive art, craft and design libraries. The library is open to the public.
The IT Unit has coordinating and overall responsibility for IT support and IT security at Konstfack. The responsibility includes operation and support of computer workstations, computer rooms, networks and servers, development of the IT environment, acquisition and disposal of hardware, and licence management.
