History

The foundation of The Courtauld Institute of Art was presided over by a triumvirate of collectors, brought together by a common wish to improve the understanding of the visual arts in this country. By 1930 the idea of such an academic centre devoted to the serious study of the history of art had been in the air for some time. 

Education

The Courtauld offers a range of degree programmes – a BA, Graduate Diploma and MA in the History of Art; a Postgraduate Diploma in the Conservation of Easel Paintings; an MA in Wall Painting Conservation; an MA in Buddhist Art: History and Conservation; an MA in Curating the Art Museum; and MPhil and PhD research degrees in all these subjects.

Research

The Courtauld is the most vibrant and dynamic centre for the study of medieval art in the UK. Teaching and supervision are offered across the full breadth of the medieval world, however defined.

Housing services

The property features:

  • 47 en suite rooms and 17 rooms with shared facilities furnished with a bed, study desk, wardrobe, bookshelf, lamps and notice board. Larger rooms may also include a chest of drawers
  • Free wired Internet access in each room
  • A communal kitchen on each floor with a gas or electric cooker, microwave and refrigerator. Each study room is also supplied with a mini fridge
  • A common room on the first through third floors
  • Coin operated laundry facilities
  • Cleaning service in common areas. Residents are responsible for cleaning their own rooms. Vacuum cleaners are supplied on each floor
  • Free laundry facilities including washers and separate dryers

Library services

The Library team is delighted to welcome new and returning students and staff to The Courtauld Libraries. Through our services you have access to some of the finest art history resources in the UK, online and in print. We aim to offer you the best library experience possible, whatever and however you are studying. 

ICT services

  • The Courtauld provides numerous IT services and facilities for students. Wired and wireless networks are available across both campus and within Duchy House. Printers, photocopiers and scanning facilities are available throughout Vernon Square.
  • Study resources and timetables are available digitally and distributed via a Virtual Learning Environment.

Campus life

  • The Courtauld’s own recently refurbished residence is located about 50 metres from Somerset House, on the corner of the Strand and Lancaster Place.
  • The location is an ideal way to immerse yourself as a Central London student. Duchy offers instant access to the attractions of Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square, Oxford Street, West End Theatres and being just off Waterloo Bridge you have instant access to the Southbank. Cinemas, clubs, music venues are all very close by. Galleries, (of course!) are in close vicinity to Duchy House, with The National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery just down the Strand, Tate Modern on the South Bank and naturally The Courtauld Gallery.
