History
Skoltech was established on October 25, 2011 in cooperation of nine Russian universities and organizations. On October 26, 2011, the Skolkovo Foundation and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) signed a partnership agreement on Skoltech development. In August 2012, the first 20 students were admitted to Skoltech and went to MIT for internship.
Education
The university is an international community for students and faculty where all education is in English. Students can also increase their international experience through Skoltech’s network of partner universities around the world. Easing student mobility, the education is aligned with the European Higher Education Area created by the Bologna process. The aim is that Skoltech graduates will excel in the international and intercultural working environments of the global market.
Research
The 9 CREIs are Centers for Research, Education and Innovation established in collaboration with international and Russian Partners.The CREIs address Critical Challenges in IT, Biomedicine, Energy, Space, Crosscutting Science. They are the key building blocks in the effort to develop a graduate university that combines education, research and innovation seamlessly. CREIs will build capacity of all kinds at Skoltech, and will be designed to have broad impact on Russia.

The Skoltech Student Council is recognized by the university administration as the official voice of the student body. This group is a representative student-elected body that offers a forum to address all kinds of campus issues, and an opportunity for students to become involved in the university community.

Campus life
- On September 1, 2018, Skoltech inaugurated its brand-new Eastern Ring campus. Designed by HERZOG & DE MEURON, the new four-level campus building has a total area of 136,000 square meters and a circumference length of 880 m.
- Located just a few kilometers from the official border of Moscow, Skoltech offers close access to a major metropolitan area, including a vibrant start-up community, world-class theater and ballet, historical sites, and extensive green spaces.
Sports facilities
- Since Skoltech is a young institute, we still don’t have a sports hall of our own yet. We rent one in the Moscow School of Management where our students play sports two times a week.
- During the warm season, students can play sports on the sports ground near the pond behind the Skoltech building.
- This year we opened a brand-new gym. The gym is located in room 062, 0 floor, in the blue building. To get access to the gym you need to read and sign the safety policy in the student life office. The gym is available 24/7.
