The University of Hertfordshire began life in 1952 as a Technical College on land donated by the then Chairman of the de Havilland Aircraft company, AS Butler.

Student services

HIC provides many support services that will help you achieve your goals. During your studies, you will have access to services offered by both HIC and the University of Hertfordshire. 

The Student Support team looks after all of our students’ needs. The team is responsible for:

  • helping you enrol in your pathway
  • assisting with your registration at HIC and the University of Hertfordshire

Housing services

Situated on the College Lane Campus, we have a selection of on–campus ensuite and twin bathroom accommodation which are highly sought after and get reserved quickly. College Lane has fantastic facilities with:

  • a brand new gym at The Oval
  • an outdoor artificial turf pitch and multi–use games areas
  • a two minute walk from the Learning Resources Centre (LRC)
  • the Forum Hertfordshire which hosts events most week nights for students
  • the EleHouse, offering drinks, food and pub games
  • Students’ Union shop, restaurant and café
  • launderette
  • campus medical centre and pharmacy, providing an over the counter service and advice for students
  • a free shuttle bus between College Lane and de Havilland cycle hire scheme

Located on the vibrant and modern University of Hertfordshire campus which is located in the center of Hatfield, HIC provides you with the opportunity to make friends with other students from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.

Sports facilities

Whatever your sport, you’ll be at home at the University of Hertfordshire. Whether you are a complete beginner or a budding pro, the Sports Village is home to a wide range of activities, classes and state-of-the-art sports training facilities and services. Based at the de Havilland Campus, Hertfordshire Sports Village is open to students and the community. Facilities include:

  • 100 station gym
  • two studios for group exercise classes
  • 25 metre swimming pool
  • two squash courts
  • sports halls for multi-sports
  • cricket hall for multi-sports
  • indoor climbing wall
  • artificial pitches for hockey and football
  • 3G pitches for football and rugby
  • netball, badminton and tennis courts
  • physiotherapy and sports injury clinic

Student clubs

The campus is home to a wide variety of social spaces – bars, clubs, restaurants and cafes, where you can meet friends, relax and unwind, or enjoy some of the best entertainment around. The UH Students’ Union work hard to provide a great programme of events and offer a fantastic array of entertainment. Whether you like clubbing, live music, comedy, or just a quiet night out with your friends, there’s always something going on at the Forum to help you chill out after a hard day in the LRC.
