History
The Bharathiar University was established at Coimbatore by the Government of Tamilnadu in February, 1982 under the provision of the Bharathiar University Act, 1981 (Act 1 of 1982). In May, 1985 the University received the recognition from University Grants Commission (UGC) New Delhi for the purpose of grants.

Best Global Universities Rankings by U.S. News & World Report presents all the top universities from the U.S. and 60 other countries around the world. They measure the rate of students going to their second year of studies, as well as the rate of students who graduate. It also asks university representatives on the performance of universities, and evaluates university resources, teacher salaries, graduation rates, student academic achievements and satisfaction. After calculating and comparing these criteria, U.S. News ranks the top international universities accordingly.
Student services
The Students Welfare Bureau has been constituted by the University. The convenor is authorized to convene the meeting of this committee in his office as and when necessary to suggest welfare measures to be adopted to the students of the university.
Housing services
- The Bharathiar University has four hostels namely Ladies Hostel (for research scholars and PG students), Men's Hostel (mainly for research scholars) and MBA & Additional Hostel (mainly for PG students). All hostels are well equipped with basic and modern facilities and attached with adequate guest rooms to accommodate the guests who visit the hostels.
- A Teachers' hostel situated in the residential campus of the university caters to the needs of teachers visiting the university for official purposes. Twenty two rooms are available for accommodation with a spacious dining hall.
Library services
The Library of Bharathiar University has a seating capacity of about 300, and has over 1,47,350 volumes covering all disciplines. The library subscribes to 153 National and International journals and seven leading news papers. 150 journals magazines and periodicals are received on gratis. Photocopying facility is also available inside the library.
ICT services
- The common computing center of Bharathiar University was established during the year 2012. The center is set up in the midst of the University Academic Campus and is spread over an area of around 2500sq ft. This center aims to function as a Central facility to fulfill all the computer related services required for the students, research scholars and academic fraternity.

Medical services
- The Bharathiar University Health Centre functions next to the Teachers' Hostel.
- The Staff members and students are required to show thier smart card to the Medical Officer and enter their details in a register provided in the Health Centre.
- A full fledged upgraded medical campus with 24*7 Doctor service also established.
- A new ambulance is also purchased for emergency needs of the patients.
Campus life
The University is situated at the backdrop of Maruthamalai Hills in the Western Ghat range, in a sprawling campus of 1000 acres of land.
Sports facilities
- Bharathiar University Fitness Centre is functioning in the basement of the School of Distance Education Building. This facility is open to all staff, students and outsiders. A separate fitness center is also available for women.
- The Centre focuses its attention on maintaining and developing Physical fitness, weight reduction and body building. Modern weight machines like nine station gym for upper extremity and six station multigym for lower extremity for pull down, peck deck, arm curl, Abdominal crunch are available for exercising various parts of the body. Other equipment like Tread Mill, Bicycle Ergometer, rolling machine are also available to develop the aerobic fitness.
Student clubs
The Bharathiar University Alumni Association has been formally inaugurated on 22nd Oct. 2001 by the then Vice-Chancellor, Rev.Fr.Dr.Ignacimuthu. The long cherished desire of the students to come back to their Alma matter has been achieved. In an era of networking and collaboration, it is the alumni support, which is definitely a value addition for any institution destined to move towards excellence. Thus, the inauguration was a tremendous success.
