History
The Autonomous University of Chile is a non-profit institution, founded in Temuco on July 31, 1989 under the name of the Autonomous University of the South, by the prominent lawyer and Illustrious Son of the capital of La Araucanía, Teodoro Ribera Beneït, who summoned other local personalities around this initiative. Its founding objective was to provide access to higher education for young people in the region who were forced to emigrate to other cities, since the traditional system did not offer them access to disciplines of interest to them. Its birth in the region of La Araucanía left it with a lasting and distinctive imprint: a strong commitment to local and regional development, materialized in the provision of new training alternatives in the regions where it is located.

The University supports the value of personal freedom, individual and social development through education and culture, and promotes and encourages respect for people, as free and equal beings in dignity and rights, responsibility, ethics and the quality. Consequently, it seeks to generate meeting points and public goods that help strengthen democratic coexistence.
