History

The story of the University of Winchester shows just how much we have been woven into the history of the City. It all started with a mission the Church of England had in the 1830s to create an institution that would train teachers to teach in poor communities. The Diocesan Training School was eventually established by Bishop Sumner in 1840. 

Education

Search through all of our courses to find what you're looking for. From Animal Welfare to Creative Writing to Law to Sports Psychology, our courses combine excellent teaching with small class sizes. Our aim is to give you an outstanding time at university.

Research

Our research is driven by a commitment to make a difference. Our reputation for research excellence is growing as we continue to deliver impact at regional, national and international levels. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), 82 per cent of our submitted research was considered to be recognised internationally, with seven out of eight units of assessment achieving world-leading quality. Housing services

We have stunning living options for you to choose from. The Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey ranked our accommodation 15th out of 116 universities.

Our catered halls have larger than average study bedrooms with many of them boasting beautiful views across Winchester, and our self-catered halls all have en-suite rooms, excellent WIFI connectivity and plenty of communal spaces. 

Our accommodation provides you with a comfortable and safe home so you can succeed in your studies and enjoy life at Winchester. 

Library services

Open seven days a week and 24 hours a day, the Martial Rose Library houses over 300,000 books, including key course textbook, as well as a huge online library of academic journals, e-books and databases. You can settle down to study at one of our 220 workstations, or book one of our 11 study rooms for individual or group work. 

ICT services

The library has PCs on all three floors of the building which can be used by University staff and students. Study Rooms and the majority of PCs in the Library can be booked using the University’s PC Booking system for up 3 hours a week in advance. You will need your IT account username and password to login. When using these PCs you are subject to the University's responsible use regulations.

Campus life

Our campus are friendly and compact with a community feel, offering first-class, sustainable facilities for learning, teaching and student life. Our campus is split into 'Quarters': King Alfred Quarter, West Downs Quarter, Medecroft Quarter and Bar End Quarter. 

The award-winning King Alfred Centre is a bright and spacious social hub. It houses the Student Union, bookshop, Learning Cafe (with 24-hour PC access), Food Hall, Terrace Bar, Gourmet Burger Company, Union Shop and The Vault – the main venue for student social activities.

Sports facilities

Burma Road Student Village hosts the University Gym. The equipment supplied by Life Fitness provides an excellent workout experience. The top floor hosts a large cardio area providing bikes, running machines, cross trainers, rowing machines and more. There is also a stretching zone to get you ready for your workout and fixed resistance machines to improve your strength. Downstairs hosts changing spaces along with functional and weight training space. 

Student clubs

The Winton Club is one of the oldest alumni associations in the country. Formed in 1874 for the alumni of the then King Alfred’s College, its initial aims were:

  • To unite together in sympathy
  • To provide prizes and exhibitions
  • To alleviate distress
  • To further the interests of the College generally
