History

Established in 1961 on a principle of ‘making the future’, we are thinkers, doers, entrepreneurs and Nobel Prize-winners who are intent on changing things.

Our courses are designed to enable you to make a difference in the world. We offer more than 500 courses and some of them are internationally recognised, such as our Development Studies course which is ranked 1st in the world (QS World Rankings 2017).

Whether you need academic help, financial advice or have concerns about your health, our network of services are here to help.

Our Student Life Centre supports you throughout your studies, providing information and guidance on a range of subjects including academic issues, funding queries and personal difficulties.

Housing services

We’re investing £500 million into our campus, building new student accommodation and state-of-the-art academic and research buildings. More than 4,200 students from 100 countries live on campus – their home away from home – and there is a buzzing social life and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

We offer a large selection of flats and houses to suit different tastes and budgets, including accommodation for families and people with disabilities. 

From self-contained flats to single study bedrooms, you can choose from nine campus housing options, and 45% of our accommodation is en-suite. Housing prices on campus range from £98 per week to £153 per week. We also offer advice on renting privately.

Library services

Study, conduct research and develop your skills in our dedicated facilities. Our library is open 24 hours a day during term time, providing a vast collection of resources including more than 38,000 online journals and 52,000 e-books. Our Special Collections are housed at The Keep, a historical resource centre just a few minutes' walk from campus.

ICT services

Choose from 1,000 computers across several cluster rooms and benefit from free Wi-Fi whether you’re studying on campus or in your halls of residence. We provide software support, training to develop your computing skills and help with more technical issues.

Medical services

There is a Health Centre located on campus, as well as a dentist and a pharmacy. General medical care and some other services, including contraception, are provided at the Health Centre.

Campus life

Our campus has a very cosmopolitan atmosphere. We have 16,000 students from more than 120 countries and almost a quarter of our students come from outside the UK.

Our campus is like a large village, with everything you need for day-to-day life. This includes a supermarket, bank, post office, GP surgery, dentist, nursery and pharmacy as well as numerous cafés, bars and restaurants, and a weekly food market.

We are the only UK university surrounded by a national park and our campus is only nine minutes away from Brighton, one of the top-10 city beach destinations in the world (Lonely Planet). Brighton has also been voted as the happiest city in England for students (Student Living Survey, Sodexo).

Sports facilities

Take advantage of sport, fitness and wellbeing opportunities from the moment you start at Sussex – and keep going even after you graduate.

We provide a packed weekly programme with yoga, pilates and spinning classes, as well as two sport centres with the latest fitness equipment.

Our facilities and classes are tailored to your fitness level, whether you are a complete beginner or a sports fanatic. We also have a sports injury clinic and therapy room.

Student clubs

 The Students’ Union supports more than 200 clubs and societies and over 30 sports teams. There are academic societies, dance societies, an award-winning TV station and even a Doctor Who Society!

The Union runs two campus shops and three bars, and organises a variety of social events, from Freshers’ Week to the Graduation Ball. It also campaigns on relevant local, national and international issues and runs an independent advice centre offering advocacy and support for students on academic and other issues.
