Buckingham is unique. It is the only independent university in the UK with a Royal Charter, and probably the smallest with around 2,700 students (approx 1,600 on campus). Honours degrees are achieved in two intensive years of study. We keep class sizes small, with a student:academic staff ratio of 10.4:1 and the Oxbridge style tutorial groups are often personalised and always exhilarating.

History

The University College at Buckingham (UCB) was incorporated, in the form of a non-profit making company registered as an educational charity. The then Council of Management held its first formal meeting on 3 April 1973, with its foundation stone laid in May 1974. UCB was formally opened in February 1976 by the Rt. Hon. Mrs Margaret Thatcher, MP, as former Secretary of State for Education.

Research

The University of Buckingham is home not only to some of the most well-known research-active academics in their fields, but also to dozens of keen research students reading for postgraduate degrees in their specialist areas.

From molecular and genetic research into diabetes, to the psychological importance of music and the effects of government proposals on state and independent education, research underpins the lives of many of our academics here at the University. We have specialist research groups set up in different fields, as well as independent research published by solo academics following their own interests.

Career

Our graduates have gone on to further study at most of the world’s leading universities, including Harvard, London, Oxford and Cambridge and secured jobs in senior positions around the world. Among our alumni we have a graduate who became the head of his country’s civil service and one who became a leading Formula One motor-racing driver. Another secured a position as the Minister of Sabah and one female law graduate became the first British lawyer to become a French Advocate.

Our graduates find jobs all over the world, and the friendships they make here go a long way to broadening their experience and to giving them links that, possibly, no other university can do at such an intense level.

Small uni feel

Small private university. Really nice tutors. You feel like less of a number due to the small class sizes. The campus is lovely. Offers a two year psychology bsc when doing it full time. One of only 2 universities in the UK that offer this. Means that you can get it done a year earlier.
