About

History

The University of Porto was formally created on 22 March 1911, as a result of the newly implanted republican system. However, it stems, since the 18th century, from many combined experiences of training in Science, Arts and Medicine, which would lead to the future University.

Education

By having the most complete offer in learning programmes available for Higher Education in Portugal, the U.Porto’s 15 schools provide unique conditions to pursue an outstanding academic record which will be valued in the job market. All of this takes place in a multicultural learning environment committed to the highest standards of excellence and quality.

The courses at the U.Porto are remarkably diverse: over 600 training programmes (graduate, postgraduate and lifelong) guarantee solutions for all types of students starting from 1st cycle undergraduates up to Masters degree and Doctoral degree students.

Research

Just like the world's best universities, the University of Porto combines teaching with top scientific research. Indeed, it is the umbilical relationship between these two dimensions – between learning and creating knowledge – that justifies the classification of the University of Porto as a Research University.

Career

Attending a course at the University of Porto grants the student a privileged position in the job market. Two of the main reasons which contribute to this privileged position are the excellence of the training, highly recognised in both national and international job markets, and the extended services to support professional integration that is provided by the University.

Student Life

Campus life

The U.Porto is currently expanding and modernising its infrastructures with a view to increasing the quality and quantity of equipment in general. This renewal process includes schools, research centres, libraries, auditoriums, museums, halls of residence, sports venues and social venues, as well as other equipment that respond to the specific demands of the academic community.

Sports facilities

The U.Porto grounds include two stadiums, a recent pavilion and other dully equipped infrastructures for the practice of multiple sports. Aside the multiple equipment available at the Boa Hora Sports Centre (Polo I), at the Faculty of Sport and at the recently inaugurated Luís Falcão Pavillion (Polo II), the U.Porto has also, since 2013, been using the historical University Stadium of Porto. The practice of sports is thus possible in all three sites of the University.

Student clubs

The U.Porto grounds include other structures and organisms, either directly or indirectly linked to University life, which are connected to teaching, research, theatre, music and business incubation. Please see below for some examples.

Accreditation

Since 2015, WU has held triple accreditation by EQUIS, AACSB, and AMBA, the 3 most prestigious accreditation agencies for business and economics universities.
