Justus Liebig University Giessen - Department of Law

Gießen, Germany Justus Liebig University Giessen
Giessen University has established two well-know summer schools: The U.S.-German Summer School in International and Comparative Law and the Hessen International Summer University - Intellectual Property & Biotechnology. Both courses offer four weeks in a truly international atmosphere with around 80-100 students from countries all over the world coming to our campus.

Our courses, all of them taught in English, are designed to challenge and inspire our participants in highly popular fields of law, taking into account an interdisciplinary program.

The courses combine high-quality learning with a wide range of cultural and social activities. During two overnight field trips we are going to visit Hamburg and Berlin. Students are also encouraged to attend German language courses.

Located in the heart of Europe, Giessen is the perfect starting point for short trips to Paris, London or Prague.

Above all, studying abroad will help participants broaden their horizons by bringing them closer to foreign cultures and – most important – it's fun!

The research project aims at enhancing clarity by providing a systematic overview of the legal framework applicable to UN policing, critically reflecting about the adequacy of applicable legal rules, and developing perspectives for future policing. Among others, the following questions will be addressed:

  • What is the background of UN SC Resolution 2185 (2014) and pertinent UN policies?
  • What are the specific features of police components in UN peacekeeping operations and special political missions?
  • What are the factual and legal differences between police, the military and the civilian component?
  • Has policing become an autonomous part of peacekeeping?
