History

Founded in 1669, the University of Innsbruck looks back to a long and variable history. The University has always been a supporting pillar of the Tyrolean society and has influenced the region tremendously.

Education

The importance of its status as a research and educating institution can be seen in the numerous award winning alumni and current and former scientists teaching and researching at the University.

Research

Housing services

Searching for accomodation is not always easy and usually requires some time. The website of the Students Union provides information about accommodation. One of the main sources of information is the local newspaper: Tiroler Tageszeitung (advertisements in the Saturday issue). It is important to react quickly: usually in the afternoon of the same day on which the advertisements appeared in the newspaper, the best flats are already taken. There are two types of flat ideally suited for students: either a room in a shared flat, which in German is called Wohngemeinschaft (WG), or a flat of your own (Garconniere), which is usually more expensive.

Library services

  • There is no charge for borrowing books at the University Library (Universitätsbibliothek) and it is open to all students. Only interlibrary lending services and exceeding the loan period are with costs. Students with a current student ID are entitled to use the library.

ICT services

Registered as a student at the University of Innsbruck, you can use all the computers in the computer-labs at all faculties. You will get your access data from the admission office when registering.

Campus life

The University of Innsbruck is spread across a number of locations throughout the city. Each campus is made up of several buildings in one location, while an “external branch” refers to a single building.

The four campuses are:

  • Campus Innrain (all buildings located at Innrain, Josef-Hirn-Straße and Herzog-Siegmund-Ufer)
  • Campus Sport (the university buildings at Fürstenweg)
  • Campus Technik (the university buildings in the Technikerstraße)
  • Campus Universitätsstraße (university building in the Universitätsstraße and Karl-Rahner-Platz)

Sports facilities

Sports is an important part of life in Innsbruck. The University Sports Centre (USI, Fürstenweg 185, near the airport, bus F) offers various sporting facilities for students in over 60 sports. To take part in the courses you must enrol for each course. If you are interested you must fetch a reservation ticket (Platzkarte) as soon as possible before the courses are full. On this reservation ticket you find the date and exact time when you can enrol for the course you have chosen. Course costs vary between €11 and €22.
