The university opened with a mass held at Basel Minster on 4 April 1460. It has undergone dynamic development ever since its inception. During the first year following its founding, the University Register in Basel listed 226 students and lecturers. Today, the seven faculties at the University of Basel have around 13,000 students and over 350 professors.

Student services

The Student Services office at the University of Basel is the central provider of services for students, lecturers, staff working in the different faculties and the Rectorate.The Student Services office offers services for processes associated with studying and teaching: application and admission to study programs, academic courses, academic progress and completion. Support is also available for social matters and student career plans.

Housing services

  • Genossenschaft Studentenheim Basel: This student residence is on Mittlere Strasse 33 and provides 100 furnished rooms. 
  • The student residence Borromäum provides accommodation for young people in education. 
  • The Katholische Studentenhaus offers affordable accommodation for 70 students in a central location - regardless of religion and nationality. 
  • Behind the name of the theological student residence Alumneum stands a lot of history and a long tradition. Today, the residence at Hebelstrasse 17 is open to students from all faculties 
  • The Evangelische Studienhaus Meierhof specifically caters to students of the Faculty of Theology or students interested in theology in general. 

Library services

University Library Basel (UB) houses more than eight million print and handwritten manuscripts, maps and diagrams, pictorial documents and other media. In terms of its inventory, it is one of the largest libraries in Switzerland. The UB possesses many items of rare, historic, cultural and academic value. 

Medical services

The day care center at the University of Basel is a facility for students and staff and is located near the main building at Herbergsgasse 1. The day care facilities can also be used to supervise children on an hourly basis.

Various activities integrate sustainability as an interdisciplinary topic into all areas of the University of Basel. Alongside making it a topic in teaching and research, it is committed to sustainable action in campus life and makes every effort to constantly improve its own operations.

Sports facilities

From finding your inner balance through yoga, strong kicks in boot camp, to undergoing wildly romantic sea kayaking adventures and polishing your soccer skills, University Sports offers you a program of over 100 sports, movement and body awareness activities.Most training sessions are free of charge and do not require advance booking. For sessions that require booking, you can visit the University Sports office or the website where you will find the entire program on offer.In addition to weekly training sessions from Monday to Saturday, University Sports organizes camps, weekends, workshops, advisory services and tournaments.

Student clubs

The student body of the University of Basel (Skuba) officially represents the interests of students at the University of Basel. Skuba aims to ensure that the interests and opinions of the students are taken into account by university bodies.Alongside Skuba, numerous other student organizations are active at the University of Basel. They are committed to promoting culture, sports, environment, politics and religion, and thus contribute to the social life at the University of Basel.
