The history of higher education in Pécs dates back to 1367, when Louis the Great initiated the establishment of a university in the episcopal city of Pécs. As a result of an integration process of several stages, the University of Pécs was founded, which has become one of the most famous, prestigious institutions having a leading role in regional education.
The University of Pécs, founded among the earliest universities in Europe, is striving towards promoting the capacity building of Hungary and the European Union in the fields of research, academics, arts and health care. The University intends to play a key role in its region in terms of intellectual output, the well-being of citizens and economic development.
The university was among the firsts to launch doctoral programmes in various sciences and arts in 1993 when the new Higher Education Act reinstated the universities' rights to award doctoral titles. We started with 7 programmes in 4 Faculties. Today, we have 21 PhD/DLA schools in 8 Faculties. Nearly 2600 candidates defended their theses between 1996 and 2020.
The University of Pécs has ten dormitories. They are located in quiet, residential areas of the city. The Faculties of the University as well as the city centre are easily accessible from the dormitories. Most of the dormitories have recently been renovated. The rooms are nicely furnished and contain bathrooms. Bedclothes are supplied. Rooms are offered on a reasonable price level: approximately EUR 130 per month.
Students and staff of the University can use the majority of library services free of charge after subscribing to any of the faculty libraries or the Central Library. As ours is a public library, our subscribers include people from the city and the region, students from various Hungarian universities and many other people.
The UP Clinical Centre is one of the largest health care providers in Hungary. With its 29 health care units, nearly 3 000 staff members the centre have provided health care for several decades in Pécs and in the surrounding region. The Centre also plays an active role in the practical education of medical students and health care professionals.
