The University of Salerno is ideally linked to the oldest academic institution in the Old Continent: The "Schola Medica Salernitana". Founded in the eighth century A.D. the School reached its peak between the 10th and the 13th century. It earned Salerno the title of Hippocratica Civitas. The School was closed in 1811 by the French governement. The University of Salerno was established in 1968.

The University of Salerno considers research to be one of its biggest assets. Results are published only after years of accurate research and carried out by its dedicated research staff. The research and teaching organization is organized in departments. The department promotes and coordinates research activities, plans and supervises the organization and carrying out of teaching activities.The University boasts a large database of all the research it has published and can be accessed easily by typing in either the author’s name, title of specific research or simply using a key word related to the research.
The Placement Service Office acts as a meeting point between the University and the labour market. It helps students for orientation and mentoring and especially to seek internships and job opportunities in Italy and abroad in order to orient themselves and enhance their knowledge of the world of work. The most relevant activities of the Office include: the update online bulletin board of internships and jobs; the HFJ (help find job) service: individual interviews for careers orientation; a list of useful links about the world of work, organized by topic; information and tools for seeking internships and jobs abroad; prompts for CV updating in the Almalaurea graduates’ database.
Each department has its own students‘ office. An online platform allow students to get enrolled easily. Furthermore services for students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD) are supported by the University that provides students with equal educational opportunities, full integration, actual participation and self-reliance.
The Fisciano Campus has been equipped with a complex of highly efficient residence halls. They are made up of one-room flats and ready-furnished mini-apartments, all equipped with air conditioning, kitchenette, telephone, internet connection, satellite TV input.
Some housing units are specially equipped for students with disabilities; others are intended for international students and teachers for the purpose of fostering internationalization
The University Library Center is divided into two central libraries - one for the Humanities and one for the Sciences – both located at the Fisciano campus. A third library, run by the faculty of Medicine, Surgery and Dentistry “Scuola Medica Salernitana”, is located at the Baronissi campus. The Centre provides first aid and specialist examinations. Specialist care, as comprised in the regional screening, is free for University students.
With its Fisciano and Baronissi campuses, the University of Salerno has long been considered one of the leading universities in Southern Italy, as evidenced by recent national and international quality assessments concerning both teaching and research activities. The Campus offers many modern and efficient services: residence halls, sports facilities, an indoor swimming pool, a theatre, free areas and a thematic arboretum, a medical center, a post office, a bank and a police station.
The University of Salerno has many International student associations. They welcome international students, assist them for Visa procedures and academic issues. They also facilitate their integration process.
