The Academy of Neuchatel was founded in 1838. It owes its birth not only to the strong political will to provide the region with a high quality educational establishment, but also to the geologist and paleontologist Louis Agassiz who made significant scientific advances at the time.
The university has four faculties (schools) and more than a dozen institutes, including arts and human sciences, natural sciences, law and economics. The Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences, with 2,000 students, is the largest school of those that comprise the University of Neuchâtel.
Research in Neuchâtel is carried out by about 800 teachers, researchers and scientific staff. It represents one third of the University’s annual budget of CHF 141 million.
While research is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation, the European Union and other funding sources, the University interacts with both academic and private entities.

The Social service manages the social assistance fund as well as the University's private subsidy fund for students in need. It offers a sympathetic ear and guarantees confidentiality. The service deals with requests from students for social or financial support, advises them on administrative procedures and social security matters and, when necessary, directs them towards other specialized services (family planning, psycho-social centre, etc.).
The Social service also serves as a link between the Confederation and holders of Swiss Federal scholarships, for whom it handles matters such as arrivals and departures, health insurance, residence permits and compliance with special regulations.
