History
- On 24 May 1945, the President of the State National Council, Bolesław Bierut, Prime Minister Edward Osóbka-Morawski and the Minister of Education Stanisław Skrzeszewski signed a decree on the establishment of the University of Lodz.
- Two days earlier, on 22 May, Teodor Vieweger died in a car accident near Ożarów Mazowiecki, on the way to Lodz.
Education
- So far as is known, the quality of education at the University of Lodz has a high reputation among candidates for studies.
- We perceive the current position of the University of Lodz in the Polish higher education context, as well as in the European Research Area and the European Higher Education Area, as not entirely satisfactory for us.
- This is indirectly indicated by some of the countrywide and international rankings of higher education institutions (take the scores, as low as 24 in the Perspektywy ranking, or 9 in the Forum Akademickie ranking.
Research
- The scientific development of the university is, among others, possible due to cooperation with entrepreneurs, cultural institutions and local government. The University of Lodz is to make use of the output, status, and potential of its graduates to a higher degree.
- The care for stable and close relationships with graduates and their inclusion in core operations of the University should guarantee greater teaching and research achievement, and, moreover, it may ensure the University’s direct connection with practical applications of the ongoing research outcomes.
- A good reputation among our graduates is the most important factor behind the University’s good name and prestige.
Career
- Office of Career Services (“Akademickie Biuro Karier Zawodowych”) is to help students and alumni of the University of Lodz in navigating the job market by supporting the search of internships and jobs and facilitating contact between students and employers.
- They organize University Job Fairs, trainings, workshops, appointments with employers, provide you with agreements of non-compulsory internships and career counseling (individuals and groups).

Best Global Universities Rankings by U.S. News & World Report presents all the top universities from the U.S. and 60 other countries around the world. They measure the rate of students going to their second year of studies, as well as the rate of students who graduate. It also asks university representatives on the performance of universities, and evaluates university resources, teacher salaries, graduation rates, student academic achievements and satisfaction. After calculating and comparing these criteria, U.S. News ranks the top international universities accordingly.
Housing services
- The University of Lodz offer double and triple rooms, and accommodation cost will be 280-440 PLN (70-110 Euro) per person per month. You will be asked to pay a deposit of 700 PLN (in cash) per person, which will be paid back at the end of the Academic Year.
- So please make sure to have about 1,000 PLN for the first month. Most dormitories offer two adjacent double rooms that are arranged into a suite, which feature a bathroom, and a cooking facility. There is Internet connection in every room, a large shared kitchen on every floor, and a shared laundry room in the building.
Library services
- The Library of the University of Lodz is one of the biggest and most modern academic libraries in Poland. At present, its total collection amounts to more than 3 million volumes.
- The main part of the book collection is situated in Library store-rooms. The remaining books and journals are placed in the reference sections: the Main Reading Room and Study Rooms.
Medical services
- Polish National Health Found (NFZ) offers free of charge medical services for those who pay or are covered by this medical insurance. Before seeing a doctor it is necessary to register at the registration desk and to present an insurance policy and student identification card, known as legitymacja in Polish.
Campus life
- The University has 10 dormitories with a capacity of over 4,000, which are situated in a wide campus area called Lumumbowo, packed with greenery and resembling a park. The university campus offers modern rooms within walking distance from most faculty buildings.
Sports facilities
- The sports facilities include: a multi-purpose sports field / tennis court (15 x 45 metres), basketball court (19 x 32 metres), and volleybal / badminton court (15 x 24 metres). There are also board game tables. Overall, the sports field complex is a space of 57 x 46 metres. It is fenced and lighted, and features video surveillance.
