Founded in 1845 with an initial intake of 63 students, NUI Galway is now a thriving institution with over 17,000 full and part-time students, of which 1,500 are international students representing over 92 countries across the globe, making up over 10% of the student population.

NUI Galway offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and diplomas of international standard, which provide students with opportunities for personal and academic development, as well as giving them the knowledge and skills needed to pursue successful careers. The University is comprised of the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies; College of Engineering and Informatics; College of Business, Law and Public Policy; College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences; and College of Science.

The University's approach to innovative programme development means that courses are developed to reflect the ever-changing needs of the job market and the economy. In tandem with it’s exciting range of programme, the University campus has also expanded and developed. In 2006, NUI Galway embarked on a visionary development programme aimed at improving the University's campus facilities, academic programmes and student amenities. The University is well on the way to creating the Campus of the Future, welcoming more students each year and developing a prestigious and innovative University.

This major investment programme, includes planning for new buildings, as well as extensions and renovations of existing facilities, many of which are currently underway.

INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL

The International Summer School at NUI Galway offers programmes in Irish Studies, Education in Ireland (a programme designed to offer North American teachers an opportunity to study aspects of the Irish Education System), Irish Language, Teaching English as a Foreign Language and John McGahern International Seminar. It also provides academic credit for the Achill Archaeological Field School and Caherconnell Archaeological Field School.

Accommodation

The following accommodation options are available to Irish Studies and Education in Ireland students:

Family Guesthouse

Students may live in family owned guesthouses adjacent to the University. A full Irish breakfast will be provided by their hosts as part of the overall cost. Accommodation is provided on a Bed and Breakfast basis and students are responsible for all other meals. As students reside with a host family, this is not self catering. Students will have access to a common area for tea/coffee making facilities, TV etc.

Student Residences

Students may choose to stay at student residences located just ten minutes walk from NUIG and Galway city centre. All units are fitted with a fully equipped kitchen/lounge, multi-channel TV, an incoming telephone service with voicemail is fitted in each house/apt. (Outgoing calls can be made with the use of calling cards which can be bought at reception or most newsagents). Free Internet Access, via Wi-Fi or ethernet (bring CAT5 cable for laptop connection).

Irish Language Programme

Full board accommodation is available in both sharing and single options. Full board includes all meals.
