Student services

If you have any questions about studying and being a student which are not directly related to your programme, come to the Student Service Centre (SSC). We can help you to look for answers and remove any obstacles that are blocking your study path.

Housing services

In Groningen students live throughout the city and among the locals or ‘Stadjers’ as they call themselves. As such there is no campus or campus accommodation. To help international students to find proper housing, the University of Groningen has reserved accommodation with the SSH.

In the Netherlands the universities have no formal responsibility for student housing. Corporate and private parties provide rooms for students. Looking for a room can be a challenging experience. The Netherlands is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. This means that housing is scarce, rooms are small, and they can be more expensive than what you are used to at home.

Library services

The Library is located in the centre of town, opposite the Academy Building.

The Library holds about three million books and journals. You can also go there to work with digital material and to consult internet and electronic databases. Although the Library has 1600 places to study, it’s not just there for study purposes.

ICT services

  • Wireless internet
For students and employees - eduroam. In a large part of the university buildings students and employees of the RUG and other educational institutions are able to use the wireless network eduroam.

Medical services

The Health, Safety & Environment Service (AMD) employs a variety of experts in the fields of work and organization, sick leave, staff welfare, occupational health and hygiene, ergonomics, the environment, occupational safety and radiation safety.

Student Life

Campus life

Each student has different ambitions, interests and knowledge. To cater for these differences as effectively as possible, the University of Groningen has a range of ways to help you give your studies more content and colour.

The University thinks it is important for students to develop their potential and to look beyond borders. This can be taken literally – for instance, you can study abroad – but you can also broaden your study programme itself.

You can also be active outside lectures, achieving at a high level and getting the best out of yourself, for example in sports, culture or on committees. After all, being a student is more than just attending lectures.

Sports facilities

Sports are an important part of student life in Groningen, where, as a student, you have the good fortune to be able to play sports at the best and biggest student sports organization in the Netherlands: the ACLO.

Students of the University of Groningen or Hanze University Groningen are entitled to purchase an ACLO sports pass. For a small sum you can make unlimited use of the ACLO facilities for a whole year. Every year 18,000 students in Groningen buy one of these ACLO sports passes.

Student clubs

For graduate and undergraduate students alike the students’ association of the Faculty of Philosophy, STUFF organizes many activities to unite the members of our Faculty.
