Colombo city life
The city is a national economic and diplomatic hotspot, even though it is not the official capital of Sri Lanka, but thanks to its strategic location on the East – West sea trade routes. Colombo is also rich in waters, since it holds many canals, the giant Beira Lake and the Kelani River that borders the city on the North – East.
Galle Face Green and Galle Face Hotel are two of the landmarks that make the city unique and offer you a vibe of fresh air, along the Indian Ocean coast. A unique site is also the Gangaramaya Temple, with an architectural mix of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chinese style.
During weekends or after classes you may take a walk in Viharamahadevi Park, visit the National Museum of Colombo, Dehiwala Zoological Garden and the Town Hall and the statue of Buddha. If you wish to relax outdoors, you can visit the nearby beaches or Laser World, the city’s amusement and water park.
In the evening, you may enjoy a theatre or music performance. Among the most famous festivals that take place in the city there are the celebration of Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death, Eid Ul Litr and Eid Ul Adha, Sinhala and Hindu Aluth Awurudda’. Events are also the times when visitors go on shopping sessions and the city is even more vivid than usual.
Relaxation is also available in one of the city’s cricket stadiums.
International atmosphere in Colombo
Being a multicultural city due to its history, Colombo is one of the spots where atmosphere is truly international. Locals come from a mix of ethnic groups and communities, such as the Snhalese, Sri Lankan Moors and Tamils, together with Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch, Malay and Indians. European inhabitants are also present.
International students are also enrolled in universities of Colombo, so there are high chances you will make friends in the city.
Weather Colombo
Colombo has a pretty temperate climate, with a sole change that occurs from May to August and October to January, when monsoon seasons bring heavy rainfalls. The average temperature in March – April is 31°C (87.8°F) and 30.3° (86.5°F).
