Microbiology has become increasingly important in the area of science; not just for it’s significance to human health, but also to veterinary care, farming, horticulture and environmental management.

• Microbes have the potential to have a much greater impact upon cleaning up otherwise troublesome pollutants: everything from oil spills to plastics in the environment.

• Microbes can change the nature of soils, improving their ability to grow certain plants.

• Microbes can combat diseases in humans, animals and plants.

• The application of microbiological knowledge is expanding along with advancement in microbiological research, but to understand the potential and apply yourself to the opportunities that are emerging you must first acquire a foundation in the subject. This is what this course sets out to do.

Importance of Microbes

The term “germs” pretty much always has a bad impression attached to it. Germs are actually very useful to mankind and the environment and in the field of science they’re refered to as Microorganisms or “Microbes”. It is important to realise that not all microbes are bad and that sometimes killing off all of them isn’t the best solution – this also kills the useful ones.

Microorganisms are responsible for the following:

• Digesting the food we eat, and food that animals and plant life eat

• Maintaining our health – They can protect us from pathogens

• Aiding in plant growth – Rhizobium bacteria use nitrogen to aid plant growth in roots

• Decomposing waste materials – human, animal and plant waste can be minimised by bacteria

• Biofuels – This can be made through decomposing waste

• Producing foods – wine, beer, cheese and yoghurt can be made through a process called fermentation
