Overview
Starting from simple tasks such as telling the time, you will progress unit by unit towards being able to hold longer conversations and to understand more language in different situations. You'll acquire knowledge of some more basic structures of Spanish, along with key vocabulary, such as telling the time and talking about likes and dislikes. This course also continues to build your awareness of the cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world.
After successfully completing this Beginners Spanish 2 course at The Open University UK, you will receive a digital badge. This can be shared on social media, added to email signatures or act as a certificate.
You will learn
After completing this course, you should be able to:
- communicate with speakers of Spanish in a limited range of predictable and simple contexts relating to everyday situations
- understand and use simple Spanish grammatical structures (for example, questions and statements), and common terms for everyday objects and events
- recognise and use basic Spanish phrases in formal and informal styles of communication and use polite forms of address and greetings
- show basic intercultural communicative competence, including an awareness of Spanish-speaking cultures and societies.
The course is designed to help you achieve a level of language proficiency equivalent to level A1 of the Council of Europe Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR).

In Beginners Spanish 2, you will learn how to:
- tell the time and talk about working hours and opening and closing times
- talk about going to places and means of transport
- say what you do in your daily and weekly routine
- talk about mealtimes and eating habits
- talk about hobbies and spare time
- talk about likes and dislikes
- express preferences and give reasons
- express opinions, agreement and disagreement.
Learning a language is also learning about culture, so you will also discover information about different aspects of the Hispanic culture related to food and music.
