Overview
What you will study
The Society, Language an the Arts course offered by University of Cape Town is an immersive experience where students have the opportunity to participate in various activities such as using South African slang, creating San & Khoi rock art, learning African dance, testing their tongues with isiXhosa, and more. While keeping this course both interesting and interactive, students will experience various modern societies first-hand while simultaneously taking a deep dive into South African past.
Programme Structure
The program focuses on:
- A solid understanding of South African history and migration patterns to provide the framework for a better understanding of communities.
- Engage in learning more about Cape Town's first people in the San & Khoi, while partaking in activities such as rock art and healing dance.
- Learn more about the different Xhosa communities in Cape Town and some of the cultural traditions they hold.
- Dive deeper into Afrikaaps culture by gaining more insight about this unique group's language, food and history.

- When selecting your subject, you would either already be a student in this subject or considering taking the subject in the near future, as prior knowledge will be of assistance.
- However, if you have never studied the subject before, having a strong interest will be beneficial and will allow you to engage in the subject matter.
- We expect all participants to have a very good level of English which allows them to interact with fellow participants, as well as the faculty and programme team members.
- Participants also have to be able to get involved in academic discussions and take part in assessments and tests at the end of each course.
