Overview
What you will study
The 21st Century Waste Management and Resource Recovery course offered by University of Pretoria will enhance the technical knowledge of delegates in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and implementation of the ‘Cradle to Grave’ approach to proper product development. Furthermore, the course covers aspects of volarisation of waste using pyrolysis and carbonisation processes using refuse and biomass waste streams as feedstock. The course will include examples of products such as paper, plastic, cloth, tires, etc., that could benefit from a proper LCA consideration at the point of generation. Other waste streams such as Marula, coconut, peanut, molinga, and wood bulk will be discussed for their potential as GAC sources for water treatment and as energy storage materials during the utilisation of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy.
After successfully completing of this course, the delegate will be:
- Conversant with the most modern strategies of waste collection, treatment and disposal
- Conversant with the holistic approach to treatment of refuse with the view of obtaining as much value as possible from the process
- Informed about the economic balance between the cost of treatment and the long-term safety of the environment (Environmental Economics), and
- Able to participate meaningfully in the formulation of environmental assessment tools to achieve full beneficiation of refuse and waste.
