What you will learn
The learning objectives of the Introduction to Legislative Drafting course offered by North-West University (NWU) are:
- Basic knowledge and informed understanding of the general constitutional law (Legislative capacity of Parliament and Provincial legislature, Separation of power, Judicial authority, doctrine of legality).
- Basic knowledge and informed understanding of the role of the drafter in legislative drafting.
- Elementary knowledge and informed understanding of the structure of a Bill including the influence of drafting style and techniques, simplicity and precision.
- Knowledge of, and the ability to discuss what makes good legislation including essential attributes of a good draftsman.
- Basic knowledge and informed understanding of public participation, initiation and development of legislation.

The program focuses on:- Legislative capacity of Parliament and Provincial legislature,
- Separation of Powers,
- Judicial Authority,
- Doctrine of legality,
- Role of the drafter in legislative drafting
- The structure of a piece of legislation including the influence of drafting style and techniques, the necessity of simplicity and precision;
- Essential attributes of a good draftsman;
- Public participation and initiation and development of legislation.
