Overview
Key facts
Boston University's Seminar in Literature Topic for summer 2023: Encountering Others. When Walt Whitman asks, "What is it then between us?" he wonders what connects individuals and what keeps them apart. He is also thinking about the creation of an "us"--how individuals, relationships, and communities overcome (or fail to overcome) misunderstanding, difference, repression, and oppression.
This course focuses on the struggle of encountering others, a challenge that takes various forms. How do cultures and identities bind and separate? Can we know other minds and interior states, including our own? How might writing and speech come between people in ways that simultaneously reveal and obscure? Such questions are explored in sociopolitical, philosophical, psychological, and aesthetic contexts.
The primary materials on the syllabus include literature from a range of genres and periods, including writings from William Shakespeare, Herman Melville, Nella Larsen, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, W.E.B. Du Bois, Jhumpa Lahiri, Carmen Maria Machado, and contemporary poets. Required of concentrators in English. Satisfies CAS WR 150 requirement.
