Overview
What you will study
Mental health and primary care clinicians treating individuals in this middle life stage (approximately ages 30-65) need to better understand the interplay of these factors and their effects on a person's mental health. In this Sex, Sexuality, and Gender - Navigating Adulthood program offered by Harvard University , we will discuss exploring the many types of relationships and experimentation, the choice to have or not have a family and children, challenges in different cultures, changing gender roles, career decisions and their impacts, and starting to experience physical changes or consider mortality.
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Evaluate the developmental stage of each patient and devise tailored treatment plans that address their particular mental health needs.
- Review how race, culture, gender, religion, and class affect sexuality and gender identity shifts in adults.
- Discuss how a person's gender and sexuality may affect their experience of common life milestones that occur in adulthood.
- Identify specific questions that should be asked of patients to help them navigate issues related to sex, sexuality, and gender that commonly arise in adulthood.
- Foster better communication in intergenerational relationships that occur in adulthood.
