What you will study
The late 19th century saw the emergence of new movements in art and literature, that looked unflinchingly at the lives of ordinary people in their daily circumstances of travail, poverty and even crime. The operatic counterpart was the Italian movement of verismo, which produced some of the most memorable achievements of opera, from the immortal Cav & Pag of Mascagni and Leoncavallo, through Giordano, Cilea and Wolf-Ferrari, to the succession of masterworks by Puccini. These explored the world of little people in their passions, betrayal and searing humanity (from La Boheme to Turandot). The World of Verismo, and the Genius of Giacomo Puccini course offered by University of Cambridge will explore these topics.

No academic qualifications are required and most courses are suitable for students who are new to the subject. Please ensure that you complete any required reading listed in your course materials before the course starts to enable you to fully participate and get the maximum enjoyment out of your course.
