About

The From Swift to Spitting Image - 300 years of British politicial humour course offered by University of Cambridge will allow you to appreciate the history of British political satire, explore each era in more detail and reflect on the future of the form.

Overview

What you will study

Humourists have always been key communicators of the inconvenient truths. They are, by nature, name-callers and finger-pointers, the first to announce when the emperor has no clothes. If anyone, therefore, is going to let in daylight upon magic and shake the show of authority, it is the person whose weapon is humour. This From Swift to Spitting Image - 300 years of British politicial humour course offered by University of Cambridge will explore the ways in which the British, from the Enlightenment to the Internet, have laughed at their supposed masters, encompassing the likes of Swift, Hogarth and Gillray, Dickens, Flanders and Swann, the Boulting Brothers, Beyond the Fringe, Frankie Howerd, Yes Minister, Spitting Image and The Thick of It. The styles will be evaluated, the impact assessed – and the art appreciated.
