About

The Making of the Modern Middle East course offered by University of Cambridge will help you gain and develop an understanding of the ambiguities, contradictions and confusion of the modern history of the Middle East, including the nature of irreconcilable narratives.

Overview

What you will study

The Modern Middle East continues to have the power to capture our attention at almost every turn, most recently with the elections in Turkey, turmoil in Israel and Syria’s return to the wider Arab fold. Yet why does it look as it does today, so frequently turbulent, contradictory and seemingly defiant of explanation? The Making of the Modern Middle East course offered by University of Cambridge focuses on the period from the late 19th century to the present day, exploring the linked themes of religious and social identities, geography, external interventions, resources, and modern development in order to illustrate the highly complex tapestry of history, politics, cultures and peoples.

Programme Structure

The program focuses on:

  • more widely understand the region’s complexity
  • better understand the key historical factors that have shaped the region
