About

This Unexpected pasts - ancient discoveries that should not exist course offered by University of Cambridge will take a look at a selection of discoveries that should not – according to the received wisdom of the day – have existed.

Overview

What you will study

Archaeology was once described as a means to ‘prove demonstratively those Facts which are asserted in History’. Yet the results of archaeological investigation do not always fall into line lockstep with existing views of history. This Unexpected pasts - ancient discoveries that should not exist course offered by University of Cambridge will investigate the true depth of human prehistory, what is believed to be the earliest representation of the cosmos, a mechanical Greek computer, the Sutton Hoo ship burial, and lost cities in the jungles of South America. As well as investigating the finds themselves, we will examine their impact on how we view our human past.

Programme Structure

The program focuses on:

  • understand how perceptions of the past are created
  • grasp the strengths and weaknesses of different disciplinary approaches
  • appreciate how fresh evidence can refine or revolutionise our understanding
  • know key case studies that have shifted perceptions of the past
