Overview
Examine different genres and gain understanding of turbulent histories and complex societies by reading captivating books from the Spanish-speaking world. Brief introductory talks by the tutor to contextualise novels, followed by small and large group discussions.
Key facts
- Open to everyone who enjoys exploring different worlds. All books are available in translation.
- University of Strathclyde's Hispanic Literature in Translation class will be taught in English and no knowledge of Spanish is required. However, if you wish to read the novels in Spanish, that is absolutely fine.

- The books the group will discuss are 'The Adventures of China Iron', Gabriela Cabezón Cámara (Argentina) 22 January, 'The Years with Laura Díaz',Carlos Fuentes (Mexico) 19 February, 'Soldiers of Salamis', Javier Cercas (Spain) 18 March, 'Water over Stones', Bernardo Atxaga (Basque) 15 April, 'Death in the Andes', Mario Vargas Llosa (Peru) 13 May, 'The Twilight Zone', Nona Fernández (Chile) 10 June.
- Each book (acquired independently) needs to be read in advance of the class session and are available as hardcopies or Kindle versions to purchase. Most are also available from libraries. Students are responsible for purchasing their own materials.
