What you will study
This is the session for non-Indigenous people who are new to offering a land acknowledgement and want to do it with good intentions, understand its purpose, and consider the ways they can be authentic versus just “saying the words.”
This What is Indigenous course offered by Brock University will be taught with the principles of safe and brave spaces. Learners are encouraged to ask questions about how they can support and offer a land acknowledgment without judgement.Programme Structure
The program focuses on:
- Determine when to do a Land Acknowledgement and when not to
- Outline what is a performative gesture and how not to trivialize a Land Acknowledgement
- Analyze Land Acknowledgments to know the necessary and unnecessary elements
- Determine where to add in your personal reflections and how to do so appropriately
- Learn who does a Land Acknowledgment and who does not
- Practice sharing a Land Acknowledgement for the area you live and/or work
