What you will study
This Care of the Ventilated Patient course offered by The University of Notre Dame Australia is designed for those working in critical care environments providing moderate to long term care of these patients (HDU, ICU, EDs experiencing delays in transfer to ICU).
By the end of the course, participant should be able to:
- Assess the mechanically ventilated patient, identifying abnormalities and provide a rationale(s) for their presence
- Describe the monitoring requirements for a mechanically ventilated patient including normal vs abnormal findings and reasons for their presence within a given scenario
- Discuss the various modes of non-invasive and invasive ventilation, their indications, settings required and how each mode aims to provide optimal support to patients in various conditions
- Discuss the pharmacological requirements of the mechanically ventilated patient across various scenarios, determining the mechanism of action, indications, contraindications, desired effects, adverse effects, and monitoring required for each.

- assessment and monitoring of the patient undergoing mechanical ventilation
- the principles of multiple ventilation modes that can be applied by experienced clinicians
- enhance the support and synchrony of mechanical ventilation with the patient
- supportive measures that enhance the care of the patients
- the use of sedative and paralytics infusions
- haemodynamic support (inotropes and vasopressors that can be required due to mechanical ventilation pressures, use of sedatives or the condition that required ventilation)
