About

This Changing Travel Behaviour module at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) will draw on a range of theories from psychology, sociology and behavioural economics to explain travel behaviour and the circumstances in which behaviour changes.

Overview

You will examine historic and emerging trends in travel behaviour and lifestyles; understand how people make decisions relating to transport, drawing on social psychological theories; and consider the design and implementation of behaviour change interventions used in practice (including travel plans and other travel demand management measures).

Learning and Teaching

The Changing Travel Behaviour course at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) will be delivered through a series of interactive lecture classes combined with workshops designed to support students with the development of their coursework projects. In previous years, projects have involved students designing a real-world behaviour change intervention for a context of their choosing.

Programme Structure

On completion of this module, students are able to:
  • Critically compare different theoretical models of travel behaviour and identify their relevance to transport planning practice
  • Identify and analyse evidence on different international contexts where travel behaviour change has occurred
  • Evaluate different approaches to travel behaviour change and the evidence about their effectiveness
  • Apply theory and evidence on travel behaviour change to the design of behaviour change interventions
