Overview
The Economics programme at Oxford Summer Courses in Oxford is designed to help students understand how individuals, businesses, and governments make decisions about resources. The course introduces students to economic thinking as an analytical framework for understanding real-world issues, from everyday choices to wider market behaviour and public policy. Emphasis is placed on reasoning, evidence, and evaluating competing viewpoints.
How you’ll learn
Teaching takes place in small, discussion-based classes, where students actively engage with ideas rather than memorising theory. Tutors guide learners through key economic concepts using real-world examples, debates, and case studies. Sessions are designed to build confidence in analysing data, questioning assumptions, and explaining economic arguments clearly.
Specialisations / Pathways
There is no fixed curriculum; instead, content adapts to tutor expertise and student interests. This flexible approach allows students to explore a range of economics pathways, including:
- Microeconomics (supply and demand, market behaviour, incentives)
- Macroeconomic ideas (government intervention and policy impact)
- Behavioural economics (how real people make economic decisions)
- Applied economics (connecting theory to real-world issues and case studies)
This structure helps students build a strong foundation while discovering which aspects of economics interest them most.
Academic development, reflection & skills
The programme includes structured reflection sessions and skills-focused activities, such as teamwork and debating, to support academic growth. Students strengthen transferable skills including critical thinking, logical argumentation, data interpretation, and collaborative discussion—key foundations for future study in economics and related subjects.
Career paths for alumni
While designed for early learners, the course supports informed progression toward future study and careers in areas such as:
- Economics and Management
- Business and Finance
- Public Policy and Government
- International Relations
- Data-driven and analytical roles
Students leave with a clearer understanding of how economics connects to academic pathways and real-world decision-making.

- Learning in a small group (no more than 8 students and often fewer) means that you get quality time with your teacher and ask as many questions as you like! Through interactive learning, our teachers will guide you through new concepts and assign you practice tasks to build your knowledge and skills.
- You will also have an opportunity for group work, independent research, and homework assignments to be discussed in class. Small classes mean everyone gets to have their say, and students learn from debating with one another, as well as from their tutor.
