About

History

We started out as a modest medical school with 23 students in 1905, founded by a determined group of businessmen led by Tan Jiak Kim, to serve the needs of the local community. Today, more than 100 years on, as Singapore’s flagship university, we continue to be in service of country and society. Learn more about our rich heritage and leaders of this institution.

Research

The National Research Foundation and the Ministry of Education established the Research Centres of Excellence (RCE) in 2007 to spur research excellence in the local universities. NUS is home to three of Singapore’s five RCEs - specialising in quantum technologies, cancer and mechanobiology - and is a partner in a fourth RCE on environmental life sciences and engineering.

    The University Health Centre has three divisions – Health Service, University Counselling Services, and Wellness Outreach – to tend to the community’s physical and mental well-being.

    Campus life

    • Bukit Timah Campus houses the Faculty of Law and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. The colonial style buildings date back to 1928 when NUS’ predecessor institution, Raffles College, was established.
    • Outram Campus Located among many of the nation’s key medical institutions, the Outram Campus houses the Duke-NUS Medical School (Duke-NUS).  
    • Kent Ridge Campus main campus since 1980, the sprawling 150-hectare Kent Ridge Campus hosts most of the University’s academic, research and administrative facilities. It is also a bustling hub of student life, with student residences, sports facilities and venues for arts and cultural activities. 

    Sports facilities

    For sports enthusiasts, we have more than 40 types of sports to cater to your sporting pursuits. Interested students may join our NUS varsity sports teams and/or NUS Students’ Sports Club and its member clubs.

    Catch some sporting action at the University Sports Centre on the Kent Ridge Campus which offers a wide range of facilities such as two Olympic-sized swimming pools, an outdoor training pool and an indoor sports hall.
