Jersey International Centre of Advanced Studies

The Jersey International Centre of Advanced Studies (JICAS) is a postgraduate research centre focusing on islands and island communities. Our flagship programme is an MSc Island Biodiversity and Conservation in partnership with BioSciences, University of Exeter. JICAS also runs two Island Archaeology Field Schools as part of the University of Exeter’s International Summer School programme.

Education

  • The taught component of this programme consists of eight modules and is delivered in three-week blocks. Each taught module is structured in the following way:
  • Week 1 – Students will review the material via the VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) in preparation for the lectures.
  • Week 2 – The module leader will deliver 30 hours of lectures over five days. Students are expected to attend all of the lectures, workshops and seminars during this week.
  • Week 3 & 4 – Students will work independently to complete all methods of assessment. The lecturer(s) will maintain constant contact with all students, either virtually or institutionally, to help supervise the task(s).

Research

Research is at the very core of what we do and who we are. At JICAS, you will get a research-led programme of study with opportunities to explore your interests and research agendas on islands across the world, with dissertation options in Channel Islands, Canary Islands, Azores, Caribbean, South Atlantic and Greece!.

Possible topics for the Dissertation include scientific research in any of the subjects being taught on the MSc, that are either on-going or de novo. This can include Island Biodiversity Conservation Projects, Island Biodiversity data collection and analysis, literature reviews, etc.
